90's Flashback with Funkmaster Flex

This is where Flex is at his best- playing joints from the 90's. He gets excited. Flex was a big supporter of what Bobbito and I were doing on Thursday nights in the early 90's. I think he gives us our propers somewhere in here, but that's beside the point. I remember thinking how downhill hip-hop had gone by '96. But how good does it sound compared to the graveyard of drivel it is now? Totally dude!

Oh, and what's up with the whitest dude ever doing all the voice over work for crossover urban stations? What is that about? This isn't moviefone, it's a hip-hop station!

yeah I had grabbed these a couple of days ago. Tight shit. I like how he bigged yall up and awesome 2s as well. I laughed when someone requested the benjamins and Flex said "nah that's not even where I'm at right now" lol. But u right cause 1997 shit is better than what's out now...sad

Sounds like Charlton Heston is doing voiceover work again.

Nice to hear Flex go ape over Bucktown, shows what he's listening to at home

madnice said...

He gave yall a shout saying you and Bob were kings of radio in the 90s. Very hot. I dont listen to anything past 98 anyway. I can tell in like 96 you didnt really cut as much. At least on the shows I have.

AND he hadn't heard of Wipe Me Down...
This gives me (quite white voice + not always in touch with the BET hits) hope.

i remember back in 1993 i used to record flex playing all this shit and taping it as i used to tape you and bob..he used to be pretty swell back then.

White voice dude is Eric Edwards, he worked for Power 106 in LA in the late 90s. Apparently in urban radio, whatever Hot 97 or Power 106 does is instantly copied by every other urban station in the country. I don't get it, but at least on Power they have him saying ridiculous enough stuff that it doesn't sound cheesy and super-white.

WAS THEIR ANYBODY BETTER AT DOIN THE MOVIE FONE VOICE THAN SHECKY GREEN?

This sounds like it will be really good. It's mostly the 90s shit I did listen to. I definitely agree that even the stuff I didn't listen to is better than what is in the mass media today. Like T.I. taking top spot. Sad shit man. I just keep listening over and over to my old school collection and the mix shows from WBLS and KISS. That never gets old for me. Thanks to this and that for the tracklists.

After partying all day on the 4th, I heard Flex doing this live on my way home. Around the time he was playing Black Moon (part 4), I was parked in front of my apartment. I just sat there inside my Jeep, blasting the radio.

But just think how good this mix could have been if Flex cut down on all the explosions and talking over the records?

Skalp said...

thanks a lot for that post Stretch, you made my day! :)

yo...can i leave one more comment please??...when i was living in NYC from '97-'00...i really wasn't feeling flex all that much i guess due to the era of Bad Boy and all that "glam-hop" he was primarily spinning....yo, these mixes you posted really make me see him in a new light....I mean I always respected him...but never heard him do anything like this!!!...oh my God!!!!...this is ALL i'm listening to right now...He's totally in the fucking building!!!!!!!! Thanks Again!!!!

he's supposed to be doing it again tonight (and apparently did it last night)

for what it's worth... i had this tracklist up a few days before you made this post... it's packed with downloads to the songs played on the july 4th set... not that you would need it.

that guy that commented first ripped me off, bad

It's kind of funny to listen to this--it's a true timeline of the '90s. It starts off all hyped up on the early '90s tip. By the time we slide into the late '90s it's all mid-temp tales of ghetto misery. Sort of the Illmatic effect.

Nice, thanks for getting some of these links back up. These Funkmaster Flex mixes are the sh!t.
This is all stuff I enjoyed back in the day, but none of it got radio play where I'm from. Good to hear people still rockin' it.
Thanks for the music, peace.
