Busy B vs. Kool Moe Dee, Live at The Harlem World, 1982

At the risk of catching flack, I always felt that Kool Moe Dee just wasn't the man. All respect is given for his old school pioneer status as a part of The Treacherous Three, and for "Do You Know What Time It Is" and "Go See The Doctor." He could hang with Busy B, who was more of a party rocker, but when he went at LL? Game Over.

Agree with Stretch. While Kool Moe was getting more play than most old schoolers at the time (thanks mostly to "Go see the Doctor") he was way out of this league challenging LL, who was at his peak and arguably the best in the game, before Rakim, KRS, Kane and G Rap changed it all later that same year.

Also didn't help things that the majority of Kool Moe's production was so corny by this time - "Wild Wild West"anybody? Just can't compete with "Jack teh Ripper"..

Kool Moe was the man (79 thru 1985 at least). I think he was right behind Mel and Caz with the lyrics. And the fact that he was one of the few from the enjoy/sugarhill era to make it to the next round and be able to eat, shows he was kinda special on the mic.

I'm with King Emz: Moe Dee was technically the best of his era. Mel was great his rhymes, his voice all of that was unstoppable. Caz had some really great punchlines but Moe technically was better.

I'm with King Emz as well. Moe Dee was the only Old School MC to survive and thrive in the Golden Age. Rapping never again advanced so much as it did over that period, and he kept up. Any of his 1980 peers would have sounded hopelessly outdated in 1988.

LL > kool moe d >busy bee

that's how i see it.

the original kool moe d goin at busy bee at harlem world ...my god, after busy's usual "bom-bidi-bom-ba-dang-a-dang-diggydiggy", moe D's verse just sounded light years ahead of its time. busy got ripped up for real, but it was good to see that they're still good friends to this day (saw that in BEEF), it was kind of inspirational to see that kind of cameraderie when you think of the way beef is these days in hip hop.
